On July 24, 2026 I pulled the page-one organic results for 30 blogging queries on Google US and classified all 215 of them by who owns the ranking site. Reddit appears on page one for 30 out of 30 queries and holds the #1 organic slot on 19 of them. User-generated platforms and video together take 30% of all page-one slots, 44% of the top three, and 20 of the 30 #1 positions. Personal blogs, the sites most blogging advice is written for, hold 20% of the slots and exactly one #1. I am calling the gap between those two numbers the Reddit Tax, and this post publishes the full data.
What I did
I searched 30 queries a blogger might target, split into three intent buckets: 12 informational (how to start a blog, blog SEO tips, is blogging still worth it), 10 commercial best-of (best blogging platform, best web hosting for bloggers, best grammar checker), and 8 tool reviews (bluehost review, semrush review, jasper ai review). All searches ran the same day, on Google US, from the same signed-in profile.
Every organic result got classified into one of six owner types: UGC platforms (Reddit, Quora, Medium, Trustpilot, forums), video, vendor blogs (a company’s blog marketing its own product), publishers (multi-author media and review businesses), personal blogs (one named human’s site), and institutions (.edu and .gov). Ambiguous domains were looked up individually rather than guessed; the method section at the bottom has the edge-case rules.
One structural note before the findings: page one no longer means ten blue links. After Google’s own features take their share, the queries in this study returned an average of seven organic results each. The 215 slots in this dataset are the entire organic page one for 30 queries.
Finding 1: Reddit is on page one for every single query
Not most queries. All 30. Informational, commercial, reviews, every one of them has at least one reddit.com result on page one, and the median Reddit position across the whole study is #1. The distribution is lopsided: 19 first places, 3 second places, 6 thirds, and single results at #4 and #5. When Reddit shows up, it shows up at the top.
The intent split matters, though. Reddit takes the #1 slot on 8 of 12 informational queries and 8 of 10 commercial best-of queries, but only 3 of 8 review queries. If you write tool reviews, the #1 slot mostly goes to review publishers and affiliate reviewers rather than a subreddit; Trustpilot took one #1 and appears somewhere on all 8 review SERPs in this study.

Finding 2: the tax rate is 30%, and it doubles at the top
Across all 215 slots, 64 belong to user-generated platforms and video: that is a 30% tax on the page-one real estate blogging queries used to hand to websites. The rate is almost identical across intent buckets, 30% informational, 28% commercial, 31% reviews, so no content type is exempt.

The averages undersell it, because the tax is not levied evenly down the page. In the top three positions, UGC’s share climbs to 44%. At position #1 it reaches 67%: 20 of the 30 top slots go to user-generated platforms, and 19 of those 20 are Reddit. The best real estate is taxed at the highest rate.

Finding 3: it is not only Reddit
Reddit takes 30 of the 64 taxed slots, just under half. The rest of the tax is collected by Medium (10 slots, counting user subdomains), Trustpilot (8, all of them on review queries), Quora (7), plus YouTube, LinkedIn, Substack newsletters, a forum, ResearchGate, and G2 making up the remainder. The pattern is one platform per job: Reddit for opinions and how-to threads, Trustpilot for review queries, Quora for questions, Medium for essays. Whatever the intent, there is a user-generated platform positioned to absorb it.
Finding 4: what solo bloggers still hold
The surprise in the data is that personal blogs are not gone. They hold 44 of 215 slots, 20% of the total, ahead of publishers at 16%. On informational queries they hold a quarter of page one. Individual bloggers like Paige Brunton, the Side Blogger, and Location Rebel each appear on multiple SERPs in this study. Page one is still reachable for a solo site.
Position one is a different story. Across 30 queries, a personal blog holds the #1 organic result exactly once: Paige Brunton, for “how to come up with blog post ideas.” The realistic ceiling for a solo blogger on a taxed query is positions 2 through 5, underneath a Reddit thread. That changes the economics of chasing these terms, because the top spot takes a disproportionate share of clicks, and it is increasingly not available to you no matter how good your post is.
The four-day wobble
Four days before this census, on July 20, I ran a pilot on the same 12 informational queries. Reddit was present on 12 of 12 then too, but held the #1 slot on 6 of them. On July 24 it held 8. Two #1 slots changed hands in four days with no algorithm update announced in between. Treat every per-query number in this study as a snapshot of one day, not a permanent fact; the aggregate rates are the sturdier finding.
Why this happened
Google has been deliberate about this. Its 2023 “hidden gems” ranking work promoted forum and discussion content, Reddit signed a data licensing partnership with Google in February 2024, and search features now include dedicated discussion and forum modules. None of that is a conspiracy; Google is responding to years of searchers appending “reddit” to queries because they wanted a human answer instead of an optimized one. The commodity content flood did this to itself. When every blog post answering “how often should you post” reads like the same post, a messy thread of practitioners arguing becomes the more useful result, and I say that as someone who ranks for blogging queries.
What I would do with these numbers
Stop competing head-on for the most taxed queries. A generic “how to start a blog” guide now launches into a SERP where the #1 slot is structurally reserved for Reddit and the remaining slots are contested by Wix and a handful of established personal brands. The only personal blog that took a #1 in this study did it on a query where distinctive, specific content still wins. That is the argument of the commodity content study: work no platform thread can replicate is the entry fee now.
Hunt the low-tax queries. The tax rate per query in this study ranges from 50% (best ai writing tools) down to 13% (how to build an email list for your blog). Queries where the answer needs structured, maintained, tested content resist the thread format. Those are the ones where an independent site still controls its fate.
Remember that AI answers tax differently. When we studied who Google’s AI Overviews cite, UGC took only 16% of citations while independent blogs took 36%. The citation layer currently taxes bloggers less than the organic SERP does. If the #1 blue link is gone anyway, optimizing to be quoted by the answer engines is the more winnable game.
And treat the review SERPs with suspicion. Reddit takes fewer #1 slots there, but the editorial reviews that do rank are not neutral either: our Stake Test study found 80% of page-one tool advice has a financial stake in the answer. Between Trustpilot on every SERP and affiliate reviewers on the rest, the review page one is the least independent real estate in this dataset.
Method and limits
Searches ran July 24, 2026, on google.com with US location and English language parameters, from one signed-in Chrome profile; personalization was not separately controlled beyond the fixed profile. Organic results were taken in order, excluding ads, AI Overviews, and other features; feature crowding is why queries average seven organic slots rather than ten. Domain classification is a judgment call at the margins: agencies selling services count as vendors even when one person fronts them, individual-branded sites count as personal even when they sell courses, and multi-author review businesses count as publishers. Reclassifying every borderline case in the direction least favorable to the thesis moves the overall UGC share by low single digits and does not touch the Reddit numbers, which depend on no judgment at all. The pilot comparison shows day-to-day churn is real, so per-query claims should be read as a one-day snapshot. Raw per-query data is in the dataset below.
The AI answer layer wobbles too, on a faster clock: our citation lottery test found 3 of 20 AI Overviews rewriting their cited sources between identical searches inside a single hour.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Reddit rank so high on Google now?
Google has promoted discussion and forum content since its 2023 “hidden gems” ranking changes, and it signed a data licensing partnership with Reddit in 2024. In this 30-query study the result is visible: Reddit appears on page one for every blogging query tested and holds the #1 organic slot on 19 of 30.
Can a personal blog still reach page one for blogging topics?
Yes. Personal blogs held 44 of the 215 page-one slots in this study, 20% of the total. The hard part is the top: across 30 queries, a personal blog held the #1 organic position exactly once. Plan for positions 2 through 5 on competitive terms, or target queries where the UGC share is low.
What is the Reddit Tax?
The Reddit Tax is the share of page-one organic slots that go to user-generated platforms instead of ownable websites. In this dataset it runs at 30% of all slots, 44% of top-three slots, and 67% of #1 positions across 30 blogging queries, with Reddit alone accounting for just under half of the taxed slots.
