Best Form Builder for WordPress Bloggers in 2026: Pick the One That Keeps Your Entries
Most “best WordPress form plugin” lists rank on features: templates, drag and drop, integrations. We rank on one question first, because it cost us. If WordPress cannot send email, does the form keep the message anyway?
From at least 7 September to 22 October 2026, WordPress mail on Blogging Titan was broken. Our forms were built with Divi’s contact form module, which Elegant Themes’ documentation describes as sending submissions to an email address. We found nothing in that documentation about storing them. WordPress sends mail through wp_mail(), which falls back to PHP’s mail() unless an SMTP plugin is set up, and Gravity Forms’ own documentation says the error we saw, “Could not instantiate mail function”, is usually a hosting restriction. None of those forms kept a copy. We may never know what was sent.
The verdict
Choose a form tool that stores entries, then add SMTP anyway. On the free versions, Formidable Forms and Ninja Forms store entries in your WordPress database; Contact Form 7 and WPForms Lite do not. A hosted builder such as Fillout stores them outside WordPress, so a broken mail setup cannot touch them.
Best free plugin: Formidable Forms. Stores entries; Basic $39.50 for the first year, normally $79.
Best hosted option: Fillout. 1,000 responses a month free, stored in Fillout, embedded with a Custom HTML block.

Seven options compared
| Tool | Active installs (wordpress.org) | Free version stores entries? | Paid from (per year, 1 site) | Payment fee on free version |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Contact Form 7 | 10+ million | No. Its site says it does not store messages; the Flamingo add-on does | Free only | None stated; Stripe module built in |
| WPForms Lite | 5+ million | No. Emails entries; optional cloud backup | $49.50 first year, then $99 | 3 percent |
| Fluent Forms | 800,000+ | Yes, entries saved in the dashboard | $55 first year, from $79 | 1.9 percent on Stripe |
| Ninja Forms | 500,000+ | Yes, in the WordPress database | Plus $59.40 first year for 3 sites, then $99 | No payments on free |
| Formidable Forms | 300,000+ | Yes, in the WordPress database | $39.50 first year, then $79 | 3 percent unless Business or Elite |
| Gravity Forms | Not on wordpress.org | No free version | $59 | No free version |
| Fillout (hosted) | Not a plugin | Yes, in Fillout | Free; Starter $19 a month | 0 percent, Fillout says |
Introductory prices are common in this category. WPForms, Formidable and Ninja Forms all state that renewals are charged at full price, so the second-year bill is between 1.7 and 2 times the first. Gravity Forms’ page showed no discount and no renewal line.
Plugin or hosted?
A plugin keeps everything on your server: no monthly fee for the free version, entries in your database, and nothing for a visitor’s browser to load from another domain. It also depends on your hosting for mail and on you for updates.
A hosted builder such as Fillout keeps the form and its answers on the vendor’s servers. Fillout’s help centre recommends embedding with a Custom HTML block and offers standard, popup, full-screen and slider styles. Its free plan covers 1,000 responses a month and stores every one in its results view, with CSV export. Your WordPress mail setup does not affect it.
If your blog’s forms only email you today, set up one Fillout form for the page that matters most, usually the contact page, and keep it running beside your plugin until you trust it.
Our picks
| Your situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| You want it free and on your own server | Formidable Forms, which stores entries on the free plugin |
| You take payments and want no form-builder fee | Fillout, which says it adds 0 percent to Stripe payments on every plan |
| You already use Contact Form 7 | Add Flamingo so messages are saved, and set up SMTP |
| You already use WPForms Lite | Turn on Lite Connect, or upgrade so entries are stored on your site |
Whichever you pick, add an SMTP plugin. WPForms and Formidable both recommend it, and it is what fixed our own site. Need quizzes or calculators as well? Our lead-magnet quiz guide builds one in Fillout.
Questions people ask
Each answer quotes the vendor’s own documentation, read on 27 October 2026.
Does Contact Form 7 save submissions?
No. Contact Form 7’s own site says it does not store submitted messages anywhere, and recommends the Flamingo plugin to save them to the database.
Does WPForms Lite store entries?
No. WPForms says Lite sends entries by email and does not store them locally. Paid versions store them in your WordPress database, and an optional Lite Connect backup is restored on upgrade.
Why are my WordPress contact form emails not arriving?
WordPress sends mail with wp_mail(), which uses PHP’s mail() unless an SMTP plugin is configured. Many hosts restrict mail(). Gravity Forms’ documentation links the ‘Could not instantiate mail function’ error to hosting restrictions.
What is the cheapest WordPress form plugin that stores entries?
Formidable Forms and Ninja Forms both store entries on their free versions. Of the paid plans read on 27 October 2026, Formidable Basic is cheapest at $39.50 for the first year.
