Use Google Search Console to spot the pattern:

  1. Open Performance and compare impressions and clicks over the last 12 months. A widening gap, where impressions hold or rise but clicks fall, is the classic AI Overview signature.
  2. Filter to informational queries, the ones starting with how, what, why, or best. These trigger AI Overviews most often.
  3. Check average position. If position is stable but click-through rate has dropped, an AI Overview is likely taking the click.

An AI Overview sits above the traditional results and answers the question directly. You can rank first and still lose the click, because the searcher got their answer without scrolling. That is why clicks, not rankings, are the metric to watch in the AI search era.
