Reddit Ranks on All 30 Blogging Searches. Google’s AI Quotes It on 18, and on 7 It Picks Another Thread

Quick answer: Every study says the same thing: Reddit is the biggest single source in AI answers, so go and post on Reddit. We took 30 blogging and blogging-tool searches where Reddit already holds a page-one slot, and read Google’s AI Overview and its organic results on the same morning. Reddit was named in 18 of the 30 overviews. On 7 of those 18, the thread Google quoted was not the thread that ranked, and on all seven it was a thread that did not appear in the results at all. We call that second thread the citation understudy.

Original study. 30 queries, 238 AI Overview citations and 228 organic results, read on 20 September 2026.

The numbers, up front

  • Reddit appeared in Google’s organic results on 30 of 30 queries. That is the starting condition, not a finding: these are the queries from our July Reddit Tax census, chosen because Reddit holds a page-one slot on all of them.
  • Google’s AI Overview named a Reddit thread on 18 of the 30.
  • On 11 queries the thread Google quoted was the thread that ranked. On 7 it named a different one. On the other 12 it named no Reddit at all. So of the 18 queries where a match was possible, 11 matched and 7 did not.
  • Of the 19 Reddit citations across those overviews, 8 pointed at a thread that was not among the organic results Google returned for that query.
  • Reddit held 8.0 percent of all named AI Overview sources (19 of 238) and 13.6 percent of organic results (31 of 228). It is quoted less often than it ranks.
  • Three subreddits carried 13 of the 19 citations: r/Blogging (8), r/SEO (3) and r/content_marketing (2).
  • Reddit held organic position 1 on 10 of the 30 queries. In July, on the identical 30 queries, it held position 1 on 19. Page-one presence did not move. The top slot did.
  • On 3 of the 10 queries where Reddit sits at position 1, the AI Overview named no Reddit thread at all.
  • YouTube was the largest single domain in these overviews with 30 citations, more than Reddit’s 19.

What we actually did

The 30 queries come from our July census: twelve informational (“how to start a blog”), ten commercial (“best blogging platform”) and eight product reviews (“semrush review”). On the morning of 20 September 2026 we loaded each one from a United States, English-language Google with 20 results requested. We waited for the AI Overview to finish rendering, then recorded two lists: the sources named on the face of the overview, and the organic results in order.

Two definitions carry every number here, and both cut against the finding, so read them before the argument.

Named sources only. Google groups some overview sources behind a control reading “+2” or “+3 related results”, and those pages do not exist in the page markup until you open each group by hand. We counted what Google puts on the face of the answer, which is what a reader sees and what a publisher gets credit for. A Reddit thread hidden inside a collapsed group would not appear in our count.

The organic window is small. We asked for 20 results. Google returned between 6 and 9 organic links per query once its feature blocks had taken their space, averaging 7.6. When we say a quoted thread “did not appear in the results”, we mean it was not in that list of six to nine. A thread sitting at position 12 would score the same way.

Ranking gets Reddit into the room. It does not get your thread quoted.

The advice that follows from the big citation studies is simple, and it is wrong in an interesting way. It says Reddit wins AI citations, so get a Reddit thread ranking for your query and you will be in the answer. These 30 queries let you test the second half of that sentence, because the first half is already true for all of them.

On “how to make money blogging”, Reddit holds organic position 1 with an r/Blogging thread, “how hard is it to make money as a blogger”. The AI Overview above it named eight sources. None was Reddit.

On “how long should a blog post be”, Reddit holds position 2 with an r/SEO thread, “ideal blog length”. The overview did name a Reddit thread. It named one in r/marketing that is not in the results.

On “best web hosting for bloggers”, Reddit holds position 2 with a thread asking which hosting provider people use. The overview named two Reddit threads, one from r/Blogging and one from r/blogs, and both are about blogging platforms. Neither is the thread that ranked, and neither is about hosting.

That happened on seven of the eighteen queries where Reddit made the overview.

The citation understudy

We are naming this, because the gap it describes is the difference between a tactic that works and a tactic that feels like it should. A citation understudy is the source an AI answer quotes in place of the one that ranks for the query. On Reddit it is a second thread, often in a second subreddit, that a reader scrolling the results page will never see.

Eight of our 19 Reddit citations were understudies in that strict sense. Here are all seven queries, with the slugs exactly as Google gave them to us, because a claim like this should be checkable. Reddit truncates its own URL slugs at about 50 characters, so some of these stop mid-sentence.

QueryThread ranking in organicThread quoted by the AI Overview
how long should a blog post ber/SEO, “ideal blog length”r/marketing, “according to seo the length of a blog should be”
best web hosting for bloggersr/Blogging, “which hosting provider do you use for your blog i”r/Blogging, “which platform is best for getting started” and r/blogs, “which blogging platform do you recommend to start”
best free blogging platformr/Blogging, “choices for free blogging platforms”r/Blogging, “where is the best place to start a blog for free”
best ai writing toolsr/WritingWithAI, “what is actually the best ai writing tools right”r/WritingWithAI, “whats currently the best ai for writing”
best wordpress themes for blogsr/Wordpress, “need to launch a blog tomorrow which theme to”r/Wordpress, “your recommended best wordpress themes for a”
semrush reviewr/SEO, “semrush is it essential or are there better”r/SEO, “sem rush is it worth it”
surfer seo reviewr/SEO, “experiences with surfer seo”r/Blogging, “are you using surfer seo”

Seven rows carry eight citations because “best web hosting for bloggers” drew two understudies at once.

Reading the right-hand column by eye, five of the seven look like the broader, plainer version of the question. “Is it worth it” in place of “is it essential or are there better”. “Where is the best place to start a blog for free” in place of “choices for free blogging platforms”. Two do not fit that story at all. On “how long should a blog post be” the plain three-word thread is the one that ranked, and a longer, narrower r/marketing thread got quoted. On “best web hosting for bloggers” Google changed the subject from hosting to platforms. We could not turn the pattern into anything measurable, which is the next section.

What we checked and could not find

Before publishing the understudy finding we tried to explain it with the obvious candidate, thread-title shape, and it came back empty.

Count any title that opens with an interrogative word, taking how, what, which, is, are, why and anyone. Nine of the 18 quoted threads qualify, against 11 of the 20 that ranked without being quoted. That is 50 percent against 55 percent. Tighten the rule to how, what, which and is alone and it flips to 39 percent against 35 percent. Either reading moves one or two threads. There is no signal there.

We wanted to test title length as well and we cannot. The only titles in this dataset are Reddit’s URL slugs, and Reddit cuts those at roughly 50 characters, so a long title and a medium one arrive looking the same. Any median we quoted would be measuring Reddit’s slug limit.

We are reporting the empty result because it is the part that stops you optimising. Nothing we measured tells you how to write a thread title so that Google quotes it.

The engine that never cites Reddit at all

Everything above is Google. The difference between engines turns out to be larger than any difference between good and bad Reddit threads.

In our AI citation league table we put 100 blogging questions to ChatGPT and Perplexity on 2 September 2026 and logged every source each one cited. ChatGPT returned citations on 52 of the 100 questions, 244 in total, and not one of them was Reddit. It typed the words reddit.com once, in an answer where it had not searched, as somewhere a person might go and look. No Reddit thread was ever cited. Perplexity, on the same 100 questions, cited Reddit 46 times across 33 questions, which is 4.6 percent of its 999 citations.

Bar chart of Reddit's share of cited sources: Google AI Overview 8.0 percent on 30 queries read 20 September 2026, Perplexity 4.6 percent and ChatGPT 0.0 percent on 100 questions read 2 September 2026 - Blogging Titan

Set that against the number the Reddit-first argument rests on. Profound’s analysis of 680 million citations covers August 2024 to June 2025 and was last updated in August 2025. It puts Reddit first for Perplexity at 6.6 percent of citations and first for Google AI Overviews at 2.2 percent. ChatGPT sits at 1.8 percent, in second place behind Wikipedia. Those are cross-industry averages from data that stops more than a year before we ran any of this.

Our three measurements are not one study: Google on 30 blogging queries on 20 September, ChatGPT and Perplexity on 100 blogging questions on 2 September. Read across them anyway and the top two engines come out the other way round from Profound’s ordering, with Google ahead of Perplexity. We would not lean on that gap, because 19 Reddit citations inside 30 queries is a small and clustered sample. The zero is the part worth acting on.

If a meaningful share of your audience asks ChatGPT, a Reddit strategy in this topic reaches none of them.

How long does a cited thread last

Thirteen of the 30 queries also appear in the dataset behind the citation lottery, pulled on 24 July 2026. Across those 13, Google’s AI Overviews named 10 distinct Reddit threads in July. On 20 September, 6 of the 10 were still named.

Six sounds like churn until you check what the ceiling was, and the ceiling is six. On three of those queries September’s overview named no Reddit at all, and on a fourth it named only one thread where July had named two. Every July thread that still had a Reddit slot to occupy in September was still occupying it. Nothing was displaced by a rival thread. All of the loss is Reddit leaving the overview, not one thread losing to another.

Two caveats hold that number down. One of the ten appeared in only one of our three July pulls, so it was flickering to begin with; among the nine that were stable across all three pulls, six survived. And our July pull expanded the overview before harvesting, capturing a mean of 10.2 sources per query on these 13 queries against 8.2 in September. Some of the difference between the two runs is our own capture depth.

The three queries that lost Reddit from the overview entirely are “how to make money blogging”, “how often should you post on a blog” and “how to build an email list for your blog”. Reddit still ranks organically on all three. It stopped being quoted without losing its position.

Reddit still ranks. It stopped winning.

One more thing fell out of running the identical query set twice. In July, Reddit held organic position 1 on 19 of these 30 queries. On 20 September it held position 1 on 10. Its page-one presence was unchanged at 30 of 30, and its total number of organic slots barely moved, from 30 to 31. What changed is the top slot.

Treat the size of that move carefully. Our own July study recorded Reddit’s number-one count on its twelve informational queries moving from 6 to 8 in four days, so this metric is noisy by nature. A halving over 58 days is larger than that, and it is the kind of thing worth watching rather than concluding from.

So what should you actually do

The measured version of the Reddit-first playbook is narrower than the pitch, and it is still worth having.

Treat Reddit as a Google and Perplexity play, not a ChatGPT one. On the topic we measured, ChatGPT produced 244 citations and none of them was Reddit. Whatever you do on Reddit is invisible in that engine.

Pick the subreddit before the thread. Three subreddits carried 13 of the 19 citations. One useful comment in r/Blogging is worth more than five in the long tail, because the engine is already going there.

Do not assume the thread that ranks is the thread that counts. Seven of the eighteen times Google reached for Reddit, it reached past the ranking thread. If you are monitoring whether you are in the answer, monitor the answer. Rank tracking will tell you the wrong thing seven times in eighteen.

The broader thread looks like a better bet, and we cannot prove it. Five of the seven understudies were the plainer version of the question. Our two formal tests on title shape both came back empty, so treat this as a hunch from reading seven rows, not a finding.

We have nothing to tell you about new threads. What we can show is that threads already being quoted stay quoted: every July thread that could have survived to September did. We could not reach reddit.com from our research environment, so this study contains no thread dates, upvotes or comment counts. Nothing in it tells you whether a thread posted this week can break in.

Understand what you are competing for. This tactic has no moat. Anyone who reads the same studies can post the same comments, and the subreddits that matter here are the ones with the strictest self-promotion rules. The scarce thing is not the tactic. It is having something in the comment that nobody else could have written, which for us means a number out of our own data. That is the only part of a Reddit strategy a competitor cannot copy by reading about it.

Keep your own page in the race. Reddit held 8.0 percent of the named sources in these overviews. The other 92 percent went to vendors, publishers, independent blogs, YouTube at 30 citations, and roughly twenty further user-generated and review sources, mostly Quora, Medium, Trustpilot and G2. A Reddit comment supplements being quotable yourself. It does not replace it.

What this study does not tell you

It is one topic, blogging and blogging tools, on one day, from a United States English Google. AI Overviews are unstable by the hour, which we have measured directly: three pulls of the same 20 queries inside one hour changed the source set on three of them. This snapshot carries that same instability.

We counted the sources Google names on the face of the overview. If Reddit sits inside a collapsed “+2 related results” group on a query we scored as no-Reddit, our count misses it. Our July capture expanded those groups and is therefore deeper, which is stated wherever the two runs are compared.

“Not in the results” means not in the six to nine organic links Google returned, not an absolute absence from the index.

We could not open the Reddit threads themselves, so there are no upvote counts, comment counts or thread dates here. Everything in this study is derived from what the engines showed us, which also means anyone can reproduce it by running the same searches.

The ChatGPT and Perplexity figures come from a different query set on a different date, and are labelled that way everywhere they appear.
