What this is: A running reference of the numbers that matter for AI search and Generative Engine Optimization, drawn from our own first-party studies of Google’s AI Overviews and from reputable third-party research. Every figure below is free to cite under CC BY 4.0. Where a stat is ours, the link goes to the full study and its method; where it is external, the link goes to the original source. Last updated July 2026.
Most “blogging statistics” pages recycle the same third-hand numbers. This one is built the other way around: it leads with data we collected ourselves by reading live AI Overviews, then sets that against the best external research on how AI search is changing traffic. If you are writing about GEO or AI Overviews and need a defensible figure, start here.
Original research: how Google’s AI Overview picks sources
These figures come from three first-party studies in which we read live Google AI Overviews, recorded every source cited, and compared them against the organic results and page attributes for the same queries. Each links to its full methodology.
Ranking and citation are different games
- 68 percent of AI Overview citations go to pages that do not rank in the organic top 10 for the same query. Rank-citation disconnect study, 376 citations across 48 AI Overviews, 2026.
- 60 percent of citations come from domains that are nowhere on page one for that search, even counting a whole domain as ranking if any of its URLs appear. Rank-citation disconnect study, 2026.
- When a cited page does also rank, its median organic position is 3, and 56 percent sit in the organic top 3. Ranking helps most when it is dominant. Rank-citation disconnect study, 2026.
- Only 35 percent of organic top-10 results earn a citation from the AI Overview above them. Two in three page-one pages are passed over. Rank-citation disconnect study, 2026.
- An AI Overview appeared on 89 percent of blogging and SEO queries we tested. Four of the six that had none were plain pricing lookups. Rank-citation disconnect study, 54 queries, 2026.
Schema markup does not predict citation
- 84 percent of AI-cited pages carried structured data, versus 89 percent of the uncited pages Google passed over. The signal did not separate the two groups. Schema markup study, 138 pages, 2026.
- 40 percent of cited pages had no article or blog schema at all, and 16 percent had no structured data whatsoever. Schema markup study, 2026.
- 19 percent of AI Overview citations went to sources that cannot use article schema, such as Reddit, YouTube, and Medium. Schema markup study, 2026.
Freshness is a penalty, not a bonus
- Cited pages were only three weeks fresher than uncited ones: a median last-updated age of 3.5 months versus 4.2 months. Content freshness study, 156 pages, 2026.
- The median cited page was first published about 11 months ago, the same age as the pages Google ignored. AI Overviews are not reaching for brand-new content. Content freshness study, 2026.
- Very stale pages were nearly twice as likely to go uncited: 9.3 percent of uncited pages had been untouched for over two years, versus 5.6 percent of cited pages. Content freshness study, 2026.
The bigger picture: AI search in 2026
Context from third-party research, with the original source and date on each figure. These are the numbers that explain why AI citation now matters as much as ranking.
- ChatGPT reached 900 million weekly active users by February 2026, per OpenAI. AI assistants are now a mainstream way people find answers. OpenAI via TechCrunch, Feb 2026.
- 68 percent of US Google searches ended without a click in early 2026, up from 60 percent in 2024. SparkToro and Similarweb clickstream study, Jun 2026.
- AI Overviews cut the click-through rate for the number-one organic result by about 34.5 percent. Ahrefs study of 300,000 keywords, Apr 2025.
- AI Overview coverage swung from 6.5 percent of queries in January 2025 to a peak near 25 percent in July, then settled below 16 percent by November. Coverage is volatile, not a straight line. Semrush AI Overviews study via Search Engine Land, Dec 2025.
What the numbers add up to
Read together, these figures point at one shift. Search is increasingly answered on the results page itself, so fewer searches turn into clicks, and the answer box draws from a set of sources that only partly overlaps the ranking list. The traditional levers, structured data and a fresh timestamp, do little to get a page into that box. What separates cited pages from ignored ones is the quality and extractability of the specific answer on the page. That is the opening for smaller sites: you can be quoted in an AI Overview without ranking on page one, and increasingly that citation is where the visibility lives.
